Public Response to This Week's Events

As people of faith at The Church of Reconciliation, we are heartbroken by the news of a gunman who shot thirteen and killed ten in a grocery story in Buffalo, New York this week in the name of racial discrimination, fear, and hatred. As people of faith, we are heartbroken by the news of a gunman who shot six and killed one fellow Presbyterian(s) at a church luncheon this week, all in the name of a culturally based feud. As people of the United States, we recognize we are living in a time of cultural strife and dissonance; a time when the truth is easy to distort and difficult to raise above the din of vitriol. Nonetheless, as followers of the way of Jesus, we denounce murder and the discriminatory precedent of Replacement Theory and the violent racism it promotes. We join those who are grieving the loss of loved ones and the loss of their sense of safety. We send our prayers of empathy for the trauma they have experienced and for the road to healing that is ahead. We pray for those who are surrounding them as physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and pastors. We pray for their communities and for the public servants who are now seeking to find ways to make their communities safer. As people of faith, we are more deeply challenged than ever to ‘remember, tell, and live the way of Jesus by being just, kind, and humble.’ More than ever, it is incumbent upon us to grow our children up in just such a way. More than ever, it is our imperative to love our enemies and to beat swords into plowshares. We join in solidarity with all people of faith who live humbly and vulnerably for peace and justice in the world.
