Director of Children and Youth Ministries
Karen Miller began as the Director of Children and Youth Ministries in August of 2018. Karen grew up in Peoria, Illinois and graduated from Bradley University and completed the Commission Ruling Elder (Lay Pastor) training at Dubuque Seminary in Iowa. Before joining The Rec, Karen served two churches in her hometown. Karen has a passion for creating safe spaces for youth and children to embrace who God made them to be. Karen lives in Mebane with her husband, Scott. They have two teenagers, Bella and Nash, who keep them so busy with all their activities and interests that they have none of their own. They are also proud parents to the star of the family, dog Griffin Thor Miller, who saved children's sermons from the pandemic like the hero he is.
Rebecca Reyes grew up in Texas and currently lives in Durham, North Carolina. She received an M.Div. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and in 1979 was ordained as the first Hispanic woman in the Presbyterian Church US.
In 1993 she received a Master of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill. Rebecca worked with Duke Medical Center as coordinator for Hispanic Health Services. Rebecca is and has been involved in several state and inter-agency committees and groups addressing justice issues, health care, and community development. Rebecca received the Diversity Award from Duke University and Health System in 2003 and in 2014 she was awarded Manos Carinosas Medical Award. In 2016 Rebecca received the “Distinguished Alumni Award” from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
JoAnn has been with the Rec for over 30 years. She began her work at the Rec when her children were in elementary school and she now has elementary school age grandchildren! We simply count on her to be the eyes, ears, and coordinator for all things Rec.
We are all excited to be a part of the Church of Reconciliation.
