From our earliest days, we’ve followed the beat of a different drum. In 1966, in the still-segregated South, our founders answered God’s call for an intentional community of racial reconciliation, hence our church name.

In 1993, after a careful process of study, prayer, and home meetings, we declared ourselves a More Light congregation, bringing warmth and light to the shadows, welcoming the gifts of all God’s children regardless of sexual orientation.

In 2002 and 2003, with wars breaking out in Afghanistan and Iraq and hawks in ascendancy, we reaffirmed our commitment to the Prince of Peace and the way of the dove.

In 2005, we completed a Season of Discernment, reclaiming and reiterating our core values: racial reconciliation, inclusiveness, peacemaking, and spirituality.

And in 2007, with the help of a Lilly Foundation sabbatical and church renewal grant, we have enjoyed four Renewal Weekends, exploring our core values with outstanding national keynoters helping us stretch on immigration, spirituality, inclusiveness, and racial reconciliation.

Through it all, we remain true to our origins: we are a theologically diverse faith community where anyone who is on a spiritual journey can find encouragement, challenge, and support to grow.
